Bawley Supports Record Store Day 2008

"Yes, yes, I know. It's easier to download music, and probably cheaper. But what's playing on your favourite download store when you walk into it?

Nothing, that's what. Who are you going to meet in there? Nobody. Where are the notice boards offering flatshares and vacant slots in bands destined for superstardom? Who's going to tell you to stop listening to that and start listening to this? Go ahead and save yourself a couple of quid. The saving will cost you a career, a set of cool friends, musical taste and, eventually, your soul. Record stores can't save your life. But they can give you a better one."

- Nick Hornby (Author, High Fidelity)

This Girl's in Love. . . Part II

Today saw the release of the much anticipated second album from Sydney based indie dance duo the Presets. Here at Bawley, we have been hanging out to get our hot little hands on a copy of Apocalypso and thankfully our local record store was selling them early. It's no secret that many the night has been danced away to the euphoric sounds of the dance darlings at our local indie bar and this album doesn't disappoint, consistently providing the essential elements of a great dance track.

After listening to the album three times in the last 15 hours, stand out tracks so far include opening track Kicking and Screaming, Talk Like That, the beautiful If I know You reminiscent of Girl and the Sea, and of course let's not forget the already Bawley hyped My People and This Boy's in Love.

Apocalypso shows our favourite Sydney dance duo haven't strayed far from their roots with this one, still however managing to provide something new with an album that has so much depth, excitement and energy. For me, a lover of music with lyrics* the first half of the album is perfect with great lyrics that come from the heart or make you want to dance. Or both.

With a heavy overseas touring schedule coming up, Australia won't be seeing much of Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes over the next year - so catch them when you can. This Bawley girl is still in love, and getting herself to Sydney for their June show.

Track Listing:
Kicking and Screaming
My People
A New Sky
This Boy's in Love
Yippiyo-ay
Talk Like That
Eucalyptus
If I Know You
Together
Aeons
Anywhere
*note this is in no way a reference to the very average Hugh Grant film of the same name.

While in a jetlagged and sleep deprived (weakened) state I forgave radiohead for their sins and put together this stripped back version of nude.

This Girl's in Love. . .

At Bawley we can't wait for the release of the much anticipated second album from Modular Records darlings, the Presets. Due out this Saturday, Apocalypso promises big things, with the first two tracks My People and This Boy's In Love blowing the Bawley writers away. And let's not forget My People came in at a tidy number 33 in the inaugural Bawley 100. If you can't wait until Saturday either, head to Modular Records and download the Mouse on Mars Terror Pretz remix of My People for free to tide you over 'till Saturday!

Bawley's changing.. a sad farewell to one of the Bawley team as we expand to the northern hemisphere!

The Bawley crew have been a little busy lately working on some exciting new side-projects. With one half of the Bawley team packing up his bags and 'driving to Brighton for the weekend' it was time for Bawley and friends to go a little crazy. And crazy we did.

Easter weekend saw Eurotrash Studios in production across Canberra filming a special release version of The Cure classic, Pictures of You in an ode to one half of the Bawley team departing. Armed with one video-camera, too many directors and 'too much acting' the crew hit iconic locations across Canberra. One on looker was heard saying "it's no wonder Australian film is in the state it is", we took this as a compliment since they obviously thought we were a legit film crew! After a lot of hard work from the Eurotrash editing team, the desired impact was achieved, with tears all around for the premiere last Thursday night.

Hit us on the blog for your copy of the Eurotrash Studios masterpiece!

In addition to amateur film production, the Bawley team is branching out into 'credible' music journalism. Yes that's right friends the hard-hitting miscellaneous music news that you've come to know and love here at Bawley will now be available at FasterLouder Australia's leading online music community and 'credible destination for lovers of music'. Writing under the moniker k-rad, look out for album and gig reviews and the latest on what we at Bawley are (hearting)!

So whilst your dynamic duo have split geographically for now, expect big things from Bawley, as we cover two hemispheres and tell you about lots of exciting upcoming gigs and new releases over the coming months!

The Backlash - radiohead

Having grabbed 5 positions including number 1 in the inaugural Bawley 100 it is no secret that Bawley (heart) radiohead.

Today radiohead launched http://www.radioheadremix.com where fans can upload their own remixes of the Nude single.

To make the remixing easier, the separate parts of the song have been made available for purchase from iTunes. The parts available are bass, voice, guitar, strings/fx and drums. You can mix them in any way you like, either by adding your own beats and instrumentation, or just remixing the original parts.

The thing is... each part of the song costs the same price as a normal iTunes download ($1.69 in Australia) and any remix you create will become the property of Warner/Chappell Music, further Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Colin Greenwood, Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway will be registered and credited as the sole writers of the remixes of the song created by you.

Come on surely they could have done this without charging for the song parts, oh yeah the radioheadremix promotion is sponsored by iTunes.

But we will forgive them and recommend you check out the mixes already posted, the remix by Holy Fuck is pretty cool. For something more interesting check out the Amplive RainyDayz Remixes for free remixes of the whole In Rainbows album

Time to pull out the credit card and download those song parts.
