A Bawley technician says 2023’s multi-hour list outage was the result of a routine list ordering upgrade that took the National Bawley Network offline. Recovery required staff to physically re-listen to songs buried deep in their Spotify Wrapped and Apple Replay 2023 lists.
The announcement comes as the company moved to establish a dedicated complaints team for businesses affected and said it would work to “resolve concerns” after criticism the company’s original compensation offer of 100 free songs, ranked was deemed inadequate.
The updated complaints process comes as the list maker prepares to deal with the government response to the outage. In question time on Monday, the soon to be retired List Minister, the Honorable Richard Kingsmill, said last week’s outage underscored just how essential list making is for all Australians.
“The impacts were felt across the economy and community with repercussions for radio presenters, influencers, and public transport riders everywhere. Playlist consumers and time wasters were understandably frustrated,” he said.
“For Australians with a little better to do, including those relying on internet-compiled lists, the outage would have been deeply distressing.”
Kingsmill said the Department of Lists was working on its terms of reference for a review to reduce the risk of a future disruption, while the Australian List Compilation Authority (ALCA) was conducting a review into how it was that National Bawley Network customers were unable to read the Bawley 100 list archive, despite provisions in place to allow offline browsing.
“Our government will carefully consider recommendations from the upcoming reviews to ensure regulatory and policy settings adapt and respond so as to keep Australians idle and reliably ranked” the Minister said before packing up his desk and leaving into [forced] retirement with a 1995 Hottest 100 compilation (2CD) hidden in his tote bag.
The National Bawley Network’s embattled CEO, will face a Senate inquiry into the outage on New Year’s Eve.
