The Bawley 100 - New Years Eve 2020/2021

Transcript.

Spokesperson for the President, 31/12/2020, Bawley Seasons Total Landscaping.

[23:56] So, I’m here on behalf of the Trump Campaign, as an attorney for the President, to describe to you the first part of a situation that is extremely... troubling. Troubling for the Commonwealth of Bawley, and troubling for all believers in our ‘best ever’ President. I will not accept that he did not win the 2020 Bawley 100. He did, we did. They stole the vote. I have huge evidence, not fake evidence. True, sweet, pure evidence. With me today I have about 5 people that have given statements, affidavits, recordings. There are more, we’re going to have many, many witnesses. So many lawsuits, huge lawsuits these beautiful lawsuits will be brought starting on January 1.

[23:57] Here in Bawley there is a sad history of list fraud. In 2020 the Bawley 100 was stolen. I’m not attacking the people of Bawley. I’m attacking a decrepit idea [of lists], an outdated concept which has a lot of other reasons to be attacked.

[23:58] After all, The Strokes are still on year end lists here. That is hard to explain since they passed out of popular culture near 20 years ago, but… The Strokes continue to turn up on Bawley lists, fraud! Stinkfist. That song died in the mid-90s, here it is back from the dead, counterfeit, a cover version. Finally and most damning The National didn’t even nominate in 2020, there they are hiding on the list with crooked Tay-Tay! I am cooked. covfefe.

[23:59] Here in Bawley, they keep bringing back nostalgia artists, 90’s acts and covers… [Hanging onto the past] at least that is something that they can be commended for. But where is Donald?

Bawley.TV

Australian pay TV music station Channel [V] has been axed. The classic station will finish up on 30 June 2020 making way for end of year list giant Bawley and Bawley.TV.

I never had Channel [V], but watching with friends who did was a big part of my youth. Whether were watching the latest videos at a normal time of day (ahem..rage), flicking stations at house parties or taping Big Day Out performances, Channel [V] was always on.

The new TV station from Bawley (Bawley.TV) will not be broadcasting from major festivals or putting anyone in a bubble but we will be sharing high quality videos from the Bawley 100 archive. Tune in @BawleyTV

The Bawley 100 - New Years Eve 2019/2020

Our world is in crisis. End-of-year lists are under threat. Yet every crisis contains the possibility of transformation. Across the world people are waking up and coming together.

We hear history calling to us from the future. We catch glimpses of a new world of love, respect and lists, where we have restored value to the annual count down. It’s a future that’s inside us all – located in the fierce love we carry for lists, in our urge to tell a stranger what should have been number one, in our wish to organise and rank, even when that seems too much to ask.

Live Review: The Cure, Sydney Opera House, Sydney, 28/05/2019

I'm so glad you came
I'm so glad you remembered
To see how we're ending our last dance together
Expectant too punctual but
Prettier than ever
I really believed that this time it's forever

…And so it was The Cure and me back at the Opera House for another nostalgia show. Tonight a play though of the classic 1989 album, Disintegration.

But first an introductory set of b-sides and demos taken from the era. These songs are fine and with more exposure some (2 Late, Fear of Ghosts) could have been Cure classics. Unfamiliarity and a general lack of energy however, make it all a little dull. Delaying rather than building anticipation for the main album set.

After a short break the band return to a massive cheer and the opening sounds of Plainsong. The long sweeping intro provides both the moment of anticipation and the release as Robert Smith does a lap of the stage, engaging fans in all corners of the room.

There is no lack of familiarity here. Disintegration has sold close to three million copies and most of the albums tracks have been permanent fixtures in the bands live set in release 30 years ago. Every person knows every word, every guitar strum, every synth line, every circular drum fill. The songs are dark, romantic, practiced and perfectly executed. The intertwined guitars of Pictures of You, the slow burn of Closedown, the sugar hit of Lovesong all perfect.

There is not a lot of movement on the stage, moody projections cover large video screens the only real action coming from Simon Gallop, base hung low he runs from band mate to band mate. There is a touch of light and laughter comes when Robert Smith busts out the dance moves during Lullaby.

The baseline of Fascination Street surges over guitar noise before an absolutely massive version of Prayers for Rain fills the room. The neo metal of Disintegration provides the last lively moments of the main set. We are not finished with the doom and gloom tho, Homesick and Unititled keep things moody.

The end. 30 years on Disintegration has been played in its entirety. Many find this album depressing. Listening to Disintegration leaves them down, defeated, emotionally exhausted. That is not what I experience and not at all tonight. I find the size and romanticism and familiarity of these songs comforting, joyous even. Seeing them played all together live has dialled those feelings up some 1000%.

The band return to finish the show with three songs a little further removed from the 1989 Disintegration era. First Burn from The Crow soundtrack. A banger in any circumstance Burn has an urgency that is not found in much of Disintegration making it stand out as a highlight tonight.

The group’s debut album turns forty this year, they play the title track Three Imaginary Boys. Before finishing with a sea shanty Pirate Ships.
